Lima
The city of Lima, Peru is a very old city filled with colonial style buildings and very interesting places to visit. Within the city itself there are huge, impressive cathedrals which are considered historical monuments. When in the city of Lima you will find that it is vibrant, filled with small restaurants and of course other tourists, many people gather in the main square to take pictures of the buildings as well as with some of the locals.
Population
Some interesting Lima facts are that it ranks as the 17th most populous city in the world with a municipal population of 7,605,743, and 8,472,935 for the metropolitan area and a population density of 3,008.8 inhabitants per square kilometer (7,793 /sq mi) as of 2007.Its population features a very complex mix of racial and ethnic groups. Traditionally, Mestizos of mixed European (mostly Spanish) and Amerindian descent are the largest contingent.
Climate
Lima's climate is relatively mild, despite being located in the Tropics. Lima has a subtropical and desert climate, yet the microclimate also makes the atmosphere very humid throughout the year. The temperatures vary from mild to warm (no extreme cold or hot weather). The average daily temperatures in winter range from 12 °C (54 °F) to 20 °C (68 °F). Winter days usually come accompanied by continuous overcast skies, fog, and mist. In the summer, the daily maximum temperature averages around 29 °C (84 °F) with a daily minimum temperature around 19 °C (66 °F) During El Niño events, the climate of Lima gets severely disrupted, the water temperatures along the coast which usually average around 17 - 19 °C (65 - 68 °F) get much warmer (as in 1998 when the water temperature reached 26 °C (79 °F)), which causes the high and low temperatures to rise by several degrees. Such was the case when Lima hit its all-time record high of 34 °C (93 °F).
Outside the City
There is a lot to do outside of the city of Lima itself; the surrounding districts are a commonwealth of activities and sites to see. Miraflores for example is probably the most visited district within Lima of all by travelers; it is full of good restaurants, museums and beautiful ocean views. One of the most popular attractions in Miraflores is Larcomar, a shopping center overlooking the ocean which has great restaurants, shops, a movie theater and nice bars. There is also a large variety of hostels in this area so you are very likely to meet fellow travelers in this vicinity, nearby is also Barranco considered to be an artistic district along with Miraflores.
