One hundred Years of Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is about to reach its 100th birthday from the day it was found by the world explorer Hiram Bingham precisely on a July7th;
this means celebrations throughout the country but in particular in Cusco. The Peruvian government is hoping for this event to symbol
the beginning of a great year in the tourism industry. Good news for the arriving visitors, this 2011 will have tons to offer travelers
and not just in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Work has begun in order to improve on infrastructure, better roads in “Aguas Calientes” (also known as Machu Picchu town – located at
the bottom of Machu Picchu) and the creation of new public areas. There are also talks of a main even to being on July 7th and last
approximately 5 days in which 500 people will attend plus 200 additional spots for media from around the world. There are also said to
be special events in the Cusco main square to commemorate the 100 years as well as in Lima so if you are not among the 500 people
invited to this incredible event you will not feel so left out.
Due to the economic problems going on around the world in 2010 as well as the landslides near Machu Picchu in February of last year the
Inca city was only able to attend to a fraction of the normal amount of visitors, the is about 450,000 people; half of Machu Picchu’s
capacity. Officials are hoping that these events surrounding the 100th birthday plus the main event will kick start tourism to the
region like it did in 2007 when the Inca city was deemed a world wonder.
