Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

At around 4.30am, we will take a bus from Cusco to the village of Mollepata. Here, we will stop to have breakfast in a restaurant and to buy some last-minute supplies for the trek. The start of the journey will involve a hike up to Tres Cruces (the 3 crosses), where we will also enjoy our lunch with the incredible view of the Limatambo Valley. After, we will continue our hike to Markokasa, where we will first see Salkantay Mountain (6,264 meters), which is the second largest mountain in the Cusco region.

In the late afternoon, we arrive at our first campsite in Soraypampa (3,920 meters), where we will have dinner and enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Day 2Soraypampa - Huayracpunku - Collpapampa

After an early breakfast, we will continue our trek to the highest point on the trek, 4,650 meters. We will walk in-between 2 snow-capped mountains; Salkantay Mountain and Humantay Mountain (4,120 meters). At this point, we will do a small ceremony called Pachamama (Jaywarikuy or Payment to the Mother Earth) where we ask permission to continue and have a memorable trek.

We will start to walk down through the upper part of the Amazon jungle, also known as “The Cloud Forest”, after which we will stop to have lunch in Huayracpunku.
After lunch, we will carry on in the direction of the jungle until we reach our second campsite, Colcapampa (3000m/9800ft). Another possible campsite would be in Challway.

Day 3Collapapampa – La Playa – Lucmabamba – Santa Teresa

After breakfast, we will walk through several valleys, crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of small brooks, appreciating some wonderful views of rivers, waterfalls, wild orchids, and plantations of coffee, banana, and avocado.
This path is less demanding with an unusually warm climate. We have lunch on the way and, while traveling, we will enjoy more of the incredible valleys. Eventually we will arrive in Santa Teresa which is our campsite for the evening.

After a rest, we will have the option of visiting the local hot springs and relax in the lovely soothing water to help sooth your aches and pains from the days hiking.

Day 4Santa Teresa - Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu)

After breakfast, we will make our way to the Hidroelectrica (Hydro-electric plant). The path there goes through the Cloud Forest and a coffee plantation (Mandorpampa) and then follows the sacred river until we see the waterfalls of the Hidroelectrica. The crystal clear water comes from the sacred Yanantin Mountain above.

From here, the trail continues up to the ridge, before reaching some very dense vegetation. This is a beautiful, fertile landscape, with banana, avocado and coffee plantations. Also in this area are mammals such as the spectacled bear and hundreds of species of birds and butterflies, some of them endemic to the region.

We will finally arrive in Aguas Calientes, which is the village below Machu Picchu and where we will stay overnight in our hostal or hotel.

Optional: Visit to the Aguas Calientes Hot Springs where the entrance fee is approx US $4.
